Padmini Claims Record Fourth National Title

Padmini Rout emerged champions in the 44th National Women's Premier chess tournament in a nail-biting final round contest in Surat on 6 dec.

Four of the 12 participants Padmini, Bhakti Kulkarni, S. Meenakshi and Soumya Swaminathan were all on 6.5 points and stood a chance to claim the national title when the 11th and last round games began.

But instead of being bothered about the outcome of the other ties, Padmini concentrated on her match and finished on a winning note getting past Sakshi Chitlange. However, she had to wait till the completion of all the final-round games to be assured of her fourth consecutive national title.

Padmini thus surpassed Rohini Khadilkar and Mary Ann Gomes' feats who have won the titles three times consecutively from 1976-79 and 2011-2013 respectively.

She has only India's first Women's Grandmaster Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi ahead of her now who had claimed the title five consecutive times from 1998-2002.

Padmini was crowned champion by half-a-point by logging seven points.Bhakti, Mary Ann Gomes and Soumya scored seven each and finished in that order after Padmini.
