Inactive On Social Media 57 Percent Of Recruiters Will Not Hire You

An online rant about language politics or an argument about gau rakshaks might make you feel better, but could raise a flag if a potential employer sees it. But share too little on social media, and you're just as likely to be overlooked for a job.

A recent survey shows that 17 per cent of recruiters might not hire a candidate who is too active on social media. But it's worse if the candidate's invisible online: The survey found that 57 per cent wouldn't hire a social media ghost.

About 92 per cent of companies use social media, particularly Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, to look for and screen candidates, says Asavari Sharma, communications expert, Empass.mobi. "Candidate quality has improved and it also takes companies less time to hire," he says.

There have been instances of people landing jobs because of their social media activity. Quora user Josh Lim got a job offer because the CEO of a company loved his answer to a question on the portal.

Scanning social media profiles also gives recruiters and employers the context and detail they may not find in a resume. "For tech and digital roles, online activity has significance. If you... participate actively in tech and coding discussions online, the recruiter gets a fair idea about your interests," says Rishabh Kaul, co-founder, Belong, a recruitment startup.
