Centre has recently hiked the price of certain minor forest produce (MFP) like lac, tamarind, sal leaves and others but the raise may not be enough to provide "fair returns" to forest dwellers who gather this produce.
Odisha based Vasundhara, an NGO working on issues related to forest rights has conducted an analysis of the new MSP after the ministry of tribal affairs sent the revised rates to state governments last month.
The prices of some of these forest products were drastically reduced last year leading to outcry among tribal communities and forest rights activists. The minimum support price scheme for these products was approved by the union cabinet in 2013.
The Tribal Affairs Ministry in a press release had said that "this will be a measure towards social safety for MFP gatherers (forest dwellers), who are primarily members of the scheduled tribes (STs) - most of them in left wing extremism (LWE) areas."
About 100 million forest dwellers in different parts of the country are dependent on collecting forest produce for their livelihoods. But only two years after launching the scheme, the government revised the rates, slashing them to half for some products. Now, the ministry has increased prices of some of the produce but not enough to match the market rates according to experts.
